unexpected inspiration
Unexpected inspiration - 30th January 2012

It’s a pretty well-known phrase – you can run but you can’t hide. I’m sure many of us have used it in the past in a range of contexts, whether social, sporting or in another more aggressive area of life.

Well this week was my week to run and hide. After several weeks of stop start training due to what seemed like a never ending bout of illness, I wanted to run (but couldn’t) and chose to hide. Now we’re not talking about proper man flu, but just enough to make walking up the steps seem like a training session, or being awake for a whole day an achievement in its own right.

I’ve said before that if you want inspiration, you sometimes have to go after it and let it in. Knowing this, I kept away from the bookshelves, Muhammad Ali, magazines and any source of inspiration that would have helped. You see, I just didn’t want it. I didn’t want to train, so any kind of inspiration that I did let in, would probably mean I would end up training. No thank you. I chose to hide. But as many of you know, inspiration sometimes finds you and often not where you expect it!

So with inspiration at arm’s length, the end of illness upon me, not only was I set for a period of hiding, I also contemplated my future in the sport of triathlon and its associated disciplines. The answer it seemed was darts…

We have a dart board in the office and there isn’t a day goes by when those arrows are thrown at the board. One of my afflictions (and there are many) is that I am unable to do nothing. So throwing a few arrows at a dart board gives me an excuse to think. And so I started to think. I figured that with the right training I could be a World Champion within a year (at darts).

Don’t get me wrong, I am rubbish at darts, but recognised that unlike most sports, fitness doesn’t play a part and the action of throwing a dart is fixed (i.e. always the same), therefore I could improve and theoretically attain excellence. I easily rationalised what would be my meteoric rise to World Champion; you are always the same distance from the board, the darts are always the same and the board never moves. It’s even played indoors with no wind. I am such a geek, that I worked out that I would probably walk around 600 meters an hour collecting the darts.

And this is where I struggled to come to terms with my new sport – It just wouldn’t cut it from an exercise fix point of view. And above all when we commit to something, it is always going to get difficult at some point, so we ultimately have to want to do that sport, to help us get through those tough patches when they arrive.

And then it came – the thunderbolt. Picture the scene; happy family life at home, I was actually going to take a shower that had nothing to do with exercise and the girls were getting ready for the day. As I walked to the shower (obviously dressed for the occasion), I had a very brief conversation with the girls that went something like this:

Daughter 1 (aged 11); Hey Dad, did you know that you can have an operation to get fat removed?

Dad (amused and pretending to be confused); really?

Daugter 2 (aged 9): It would have to be a long operation though Dad!

Dad: speechless.

I did chuckle and have to confess that I was super impressed by the 9 year olds sarcasm and sense of timing. But I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I had been like Dorian Grey – hiding the problems and pretending everything was okay.

And that was that – my inspiration was back and complete. I could never have gone looking for inspiration in that form – it just came to me and it worked a treat.

So thanks to my kids, I had a great week’s training last week, have revisited my 2012 targets, planned my first half of the season and am mentally back on track. I have even decided to race this year’s Duston triathlon (which is the only Just Racing event that I have previously raced) with an aim to beat the time I did in 2009 (?).

And finally, I would like to thank you all for all the feedback and comments you have been sending in and would like to share some words of wisdom from Robbo in Leicestershire:

‘Some people look for reasons not to do things but I say you only have one moment in life. Yesterday cannot be changed, tomorrow may never come, so that moment is now. So take ownership of this moment and your life and just go for it.’

See you at the races.

achieve more
Achieve more... - 23rd January 2012

If you consider a sliding scale of 1-10, where would you put yourself when it comes to determination? What about influencing others, or being influenced? How would you score yourself on being selfish?

We asked these 4 simple questions to some of the members of our events team with some really interesting results.
Those members of the team who were very determined, able to influence others, not easily influenced and very selfish were our best athletes. And those who had the lowest score on being selfish trained the least.

For us The fun really started when we asked people to score different members of the group using the same criteria. It’s fair to say there were some discrepancies and that most of us see ourselves differently to how others see us.

You should give it a go. But based on our experience, you definitely need to get people to write down the scores independent of you being there (as those who are high influencers will try to argue with the scores if it’s not what they wanted to hear – and if they are easily influenced, they will change it).

So how do your scores look? Once you have your scores it should give you a very crude idea of what you are like and therefore what you might need to do to help you achieve your full potential. You don't necessarily need to change your whole approach - remember, it's the small things that make a big difference. And it's quite nice to be told that you need to be more selfish!

As I said earlier we all have our own sources of inspiration and for our own personal reasons. I have quite a range of people who inspire me, but one of my all-time favourites is Muhammad Ali.

Why?
Loads of reasons, but as an athlete, he had the opposition beat before they stepped in the ring. He told everybody that he was the greatest, that he would win and he believed it. But the truly amazing thing was he said it so often and with such passion that everybody else believed it too.

For me, Ali is the epitome of mental strength, resilience, determination and principles and he gives me inspiration. But when I need a dollop of inspiration I have to make the effort. I might watch one of his old fights, read an article on him, stick up a poster of him or write down one of his powerful statements that he is so renown for. Either way, I have to let him in – I have to make him inspire me when I need it.

So how do you get your inspiration? Who do you let in? Do you go looking for it? Does it find you? We would love to know who you think is the greatest and why?

Remember, the starting point is to want to be inspired in the first place!

And finally – a ‘behind the scenes’ look and meet some of the team at the first Wellingborough multi-terrain running event.

small things matter
Small things matter... - 16th January 2012

So why do small things matter? There are some things in life that we forget really easily. I sometimes find it hard to remember what I’m talking about whilst I am talking about it, never mind what might have happened a long time ago. That said there are some things that I am sure we all remember with absolute clarity. It’s hard sometimes to figure out why some things are easier to remember than others. I am unsure why I remember so clearly the TV programme ‘Mary, Mungo and Midge’, and equally unsure why I can’t remember the theme tune. And then the importance we put on certain things for no real reason – I am sure I like the theme tune, despite not remembering it – but don’t know why. I am sure you know what I am talking about.

So going back 4 years I still have one of these moments of clarity that gave me clarity. I was having a conversation about something that had happened the previous day and it was about half way through this conversation when I realised it was about me, and I couldn’t remember anything that had happened.

Now having been a student and in served in the Royal Navy, it certainly wasn’t the first time that this had happened, but at that moment I had the epiphany to say (and mean) never again.

Now there’s a phrase; never again. Possibly made even more famous by Sir Steve Redgrave at one of his Olympic victories. Have you ever said it? If so did you mean it at the time? If you have said it – have you never again’d (I know it’s not a word) what you said never again for? For most of us, it’s a lie, because we do the never again, again. Why? And as a lie it’s got to be above Santa, the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny as at least they have a good reason behind the lie.

But 4 years ago I said it and meant it. And because I really, really meant it, not drinking alcohol has been really easy. But, I soon discovered that not everything plays out as we think. I have never been one for sweet things, but with the alcohol gone, it was soon replaced with an excess of chocolate and chocolate related products – so bang went the 6 pack that I thought would soon materialise!

Not only this, but the great thing about a hangover is that the day tends to get better. Now, when I wake up it’s the best I feel all day. It’s a small price to pay!

Let’s be clear, I’m not suggesting for a moment that you drink too much or that you should stop drinking. But I am suggesting that it’s often the small things that we do that make a difference. For me, saving an average of £7 a day or £50 a week wasn’t life changing, but that has accumulated to over £10,000 over the last 4 years! And that is pretty cool, espceially when you put that to one side each week.

So, how are those New Year’s resolutions going?
Remember, it’s easy to take small steps and start taking action now. You just have to want to.

What small things will you take that might lead to some pretty big achievements? Saying out loud is the first step to success – so say it, write it down and tell people.

Next week we will share with you a behind the scenes film of the Wellingborough multi-terrain running races.

And finally – oranges! When we were packing the van for the race weekend we found a box of oranges from Challenge Henley (4 months old). Some of them were really really mouldy and some of them were unaffected. It was like some of the oranges had Dorian Gray type pictures hiding away somewhere and were unaffected by the passing of time. My question is Why? Will somebody please email me to explain how this can be? (the ones that looked okay, also tasted alright too!)

Win without winning... - 9th January 2012

So where to start?

Well, the wife, kids and I went out for a meal at the weekend. It was a normal meal, everyone sat at their own tables, everyone keeping themselves to themselves. As we got up to go, I walked past our table, knocked a bottle of olive oil which made an almighty bang on the table. As I looked around I saw it rolling over the side of the table to its inevitable crash onto the floor. But in true slow motion, movie style I did a half twisting dive to catch it before it hit the floor. Somehow it worked, the bottle was caught and it didn’t smash.

Now, i’m not really shy and was so impressed by my amazing act that I instinctively looked around for some kind of recognition. And guess what, it was there – I had about 5 different tables engage with me with comments like “great catch”, “well done” etc. Without wanting to blow my own trumpet too much, they were right, it was truly spectacular. Now to be fair, the 9 and 11 year old daughters didn’t share my delight and felt that it was all far too embarrassing and we should leave as quickly as possible.

As we left, I still felt great and it got me thinking, about how great it is to be rewarded and praised for success, regardless of what that success is. Now as you know, success can come in many forms. When taking part in sports events it can be winning races, coming in the top 3, finishing top 10, improving on a previous best time, beating somebody you know, doing a longer distance than previous or simply completing an event.

With this in mind I wanted to share 2 things:
1. 7 insights about how to run multi-event races from a race winner and 7 insights from a back of the pack ‘get around’ athlete, to help improve your running.
2. 10 extra prizes to make 10 people feel like winners who wouldn’t normally win one of the 30 prizes on offer.

So how do you win without winning?
1. Be on the start line on Sunday 15th January for the 5k, 10k or 15k running events.
2. Make sure you finish.
3. Don’t win the race.
4. Be at the presentation which will take place at approximately 11:30am in the event field.
If you fulfil the above criteria, then you could be a winner without winning.

If you still don’t win any of the 40 prizes on offer, don’t worry as you will all receive a very cool, bespoke finisher’s medal when you cross that line (and don’t worry if you miss Tuesday’s pre-entry deadline as you can just turn up on the day to enter!)

Top multi-terrain run tips from Rich Sumpter (previous race winner):
1. Footwear choice. Even though it is a cross country course there are a lot of hard sections. Because of this spikes are not ideal, unless you want them pushed into the soles of your feet! Trail shoes provide the best balance of weight and grip.
2. Check out the hill. It’s not too long, or steep, but this section can determine the winner. It’s often muddy in the middle, but firmer at the sides. Check out the hardest section and use this in the race. It’ll save you time and effort.
3. Start at the front. It sounds obvious, but is essential in this race. Immediately after the start there is a corner that can be muddy and wet! Choose the right line and you’ll out yourself in a strong position early in the race.
4. Race your competitors. The different distances are printed on the numbers. 15k runners don’t need to concern themselves with the 10k or 5k runners, who might set off quicker.
5. Push the descents. Downhill running is quick and by pushing the descents you can gain valuable time for not much extra effort.
6. Know the course. After the first lap there is a little dog leg. Check it out before the race, you don’t want to go wrong during the race!
7. Run hard through the start field. As with the hill it’s often muddy, and feels heavy on your legs. Push through this section and you’ll make time on your competitors.

Top multi-terrain run tips from Rob Bing (previous race finisher):
1. Pick an easy one to start – you may be able to get through a 10km run on the roads but over the mud, it is a completely different kettle of fish – you can always go to a longer one next time
2. Don’t purchase special shoes but use an old pair of trainers – remember, you might not enjoy rolling in the mud.
3. Don’t worry about being last; there are plenty of runners, marshals and spectators cheering you on.
4. Pick an easy line – the quick people will run up the mud hill with little effort, you will be a bit slower. Keep to the sides where there is more grass (for grip) and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty.
5. Have some warm, dry clothes (and especially shoes) at the finish, you might need them.
6. Smile, smile and smile a bit more on every step of the way and remember to raise your hands at the end, the feeling is fantastic.
7. ENJOY

And if you get the time, check out your race being previewed on radio Northampton with an interview with me from Saturday 7th January; click here to check it out http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00mgtsr (it starts at 2hours 40mins in to the programme).

Make sure you share your race experience with us in the week after the race as we know they will be very diverse!

And as for the oranges – you’ll just have to wait until next week to discover what we discovered!

Did you know?
Did you know? - 2nd January 2012

Did you know that New Year’s resolutions are a waste of time for most people who want to be fit?

Four out of five people who make New Year's resolutions eventually break them and one third won't even make it to the end of January.

In a time of daily distractions and constant demands, we often neglect what we know is most important, settling for resolutions rather than results when it comes to creating the healthy lifestyle we desire and deserve.

So why do we keep making ourselves the same promises over and over—and risk ending up disappointed and discouraged?

I have just got back from my local gym and guess what; it was absolutely packed with people that I’ve never seen before together with people who I last saw about 12 months ago. As a regular member of the gym, this can be frustrating - attempting to use the equipment but not being able to, because it’s busy with new members, embarking on New Year’s resolutions that won’t work for most of them.

Don’t get me wrong I appreciate that at the beginning of a new year, it’s a time for reflection and also a time to think about the future. And for that reason many people decide that this year, things are going to be different! (Sound familiar?)

But for most people, that’s all it is “thinking about how things are going to be different this year.” For the majority of people this doesn’t work.

In fact according to a study carried out at Southampton University only 8% of people in the UK who make a resolution achieve them. That is a whopping 92% who fail and of that 92% when asked about their resolution in November of that year, 31% can’t even remember what their resolution was. (Still sounding familiar?)

Like I said New Year’s resolutions are a waste of time for most people.

A very close friend of mine is a highly successful personal fitness instructor. One of the reasons for her success is because she gives a money back guarantee that you will achieve certain fitness objectives. This time of the year is the busiest for her and her team. When she is approached by a potential client she asks them six questions before she agrees to work with them. One of the questions she asks is “Are you totally committed to achieving your desired weight?” If she gets the slightest hesitation then she will suggest that that client finds another fitness instructor, as she will only work with those people who are serious about achieving their goals.

You see if you are serious about achieving your goals, you are totally committed to the process and as she gives a money back guarantee, she needs that commitment from her clients. Her theory is that we all know what we need to do to be successful, be it in fitness, relationships or in business.

The difference between those that achieve success and those that don’t is the commitment. Let me put it another way - if you enter into a relationship and believe that if you are faithful most of the time then it is OK, I suspect your partner will tell you different. Or if you decided to be healthy and only smoke five cigarettes per day your doctor may tell you different.

If you really want to be fitter then get specific about precisely what you mean by getting fitter; how will you measure your success?

Does that mean going down a dress size or maybe a reduction on your resting heart rate?

The next question is why, you see the reason why you want to achieve is more important than the goal itself.

The why for you maybe “to be able to play football with the children”

The most important thing is taking ACTION

What action steps are you going to take over the next 12 months that will guarantee you lose the weight you really want to lose?

What has helped a lot of members is committing to competing/entering some of the calorie burning events we organise for you.

With that in mind there is a “New Year Offer” for the first 27 that click www.justracinguk.com/events now and enter two triathlon events . The first 27 that enter 2 triathlon events will get to choose any one of our events in June or July to race absolutely free*

*the first 27 athletes will be sent an email informing them that they are in the first 27. Once they have chosen their free event, we will email a code to give you your free triathlon entry.

Top training tips from the trilife
Top training tips from the trilife - 9th May 2011

from thetrilife.com, leading coaches in the UK providing personal triathlon coaching, training plans and training days as well as personal coaching and support to Just Racing athletes of all levels of ability and experience.

1. Time to practice your skills in the open water.  During every open water swim practice a) sighting every 6 strokes b) turning around buoys (practice wider turns to avoid the race crush!) c) your target race pace d) getting out of your wetsuit FAST!

2. As the start of the race season gets closer make sure that you have trained in the kit that you will be using in your next race.  No new kit on race day.

3. By May you should be including brick sessions into your training.  A brick session is where you run as soon as you get off your bike after your longest weekly ride.  To begin with, perform a FAST transition and then just run at an easy pace for 10 mins.  As your race date gets nearer, increase duration of the run to 50% of your race distance and run this at race pace.

Grendon Triathlon Results - 8th May 2011

A massive well done to all competitors who helped to make this year's Grendon Triathlon another huge success.  Given the conditions during the night, I think we were extremely lucky with the conditions during the race itself.  Some fantastic racing in both the men's and women's races with Duston Triathlon winner Richard Sumpter notching up another early season race win (rumour has it that Challenge Henley will be his first pro long distance race later in the year).

There had been much talk about the quality of the women's field with Olympians, world Champions at multiple distances and up and coming athletes all going head to head.  In the end it was Lucy Gossage who came out on top with Mari Rabi and Lou Collins making the quickest top 3 we have ever had at Grendon!

And in the Varsity match, it was Oxford Uni who came out on top, despite Cambridge Uni posting the fastest male and female athlete.

We hope you enjoyed this year's event and we hope to be able to welcome you to another Just Racing event later in the year (next stop Belvoir Castle for the speedy beaver, little beaver and the beaver in 3 weeks time - entries still open).

Results are now online; access by clicking on the results tab at the top of the page or via the Grendon triathlon event page.  Results will be made final on Friday, so any queries must be received by thursday 12th May at the latest.

Another great day at the Squires and Spires Cyclosportive, with some super quick times and perfect riding conditions.  We hope you enjoyed this event as much as we enjoyed putting it on.  It was the earliest we have had all riders finish this year with everybody having left the venue before 5pm.  Ride times for all competitors are now online - click on the results tab at the top of the page or the link from the squires and spires event page.

If you enjoyed this event and you are looking for a new challenge, we are still taking entries for the Grendon Sprint Triathlon - an open water event in 2 weeks time.  And if you don't fancy the open water but might fancy a pool based triathlon - take a look at the new Corby triathlon in the middle of June.

We look forward to welcoming you to your next event with us really soon.

Keep up the training...
